I have a Muslim pal who doesn't like pets, doesn't smoke, drink and doesn't want to date anyone else who smokes or drinks. He is deeply religous and from Pakistan, and he doesn't watch movies or television with violence. He also doesn't think women should excercise.

He's been in the U.S. since he was about 12 or so, and is in his mid 20's. He's extremely Americanized. The culture is almost nonixestent. The religion is quite strong though.

He's actually an extremely relaxed guy. I'm an atheist hippie, extremist individuality advocate, and desirer of the destruction of many cultures and traditions, and we get along fine. He has a good sense of humor, and what I would call a rich and well-developed personality.

Sounds just like the brothers who did the Boston Marathon bombings.

Bah. Muslim nations are horrible places to live...but I'm not particularly worried about western Muslims. As far as religions go, I worry about Islam more, but Christianity in Africa is catching up, and may someday make me worry considerably more about Christianity than Islam.

At least in Pakistan, you're relatively safe from their death penalty blasphemy laws if you don't say certain things.

In Africa, if the locals think you're a witch, you're screwed and there's nothing you can do about it.

To be honest, I wouldn't seriously date anyone who hasn't been in the US at least 2 generations and who is not a citizen. I need to know where their loyalties lie as patriotism to the US is way up on my list.

Which is why it disturbs me somewhat that a lot of women voted "no" on this poll. Only 5 voted yes, including myself???

I would definitely date a Muslim. Would I date a guy who treats me poorly, regardless of religion, or believes that I am a woman so I have fewer rights? Of course not. I refuse to believe that Islam itself has more to do with sexism than Christianity or any other major religion. Besides, cutting myself from westernized Muslims would be lame, since I find the Arabic and Indian types to be pretty attractive!

Many Muslims have been here for two generations...they aren't all robe-wearing rich Saudis. Or insurgents.

So if they were US citizens they wouldn't be excluded simply because they are a muslim.

The way I look at it is if you really declare yourself to be Muslim you have to follow the 5 pillars. I believe the 3 major branches of Islam say you have to follow the 5 Pillar to be a Muslim.

I don't believe there is an equivalent rule in the other major religions that is the same amongst all branches.

The Five Pillars of Islam are five basic acts in Islam, considered mandatoryby believers and are the foundation of Muslim life. They are summarized in the famous hadith of Gabriel.

They make up Muslim life, prayer, concern for the needy, self purification and the pilgrimage. They are:
  1. Shahadah: declaring there is no god except God, and Muhammad is God's Messenger
  2. Salat: ritual prayer five times a day
  3. Sawm: fasting and self-control during the blessed month of Ramadan
  4. Zakat: giving 2.5% of one’s savings to the poor and needy
  5. Hajj: pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if he/she is able to
"If he isn't religious you are talking about muslim culture instead of muslim religion?"
That would be the way I see it too; Culturally Muslim is not Muslim.
