I have not been to Spain, but from my experience in France and what I have read/heard, don't act like the stereotypical ugly American there if you want to be looked upon favorably. Learn their manners and manner of dress (not difficult to do) and try to speak the language. All the French people I met, even in Paris, were friendly and warm to me, but I could speak the language somewhat and knew not to wear tennis shoes, jeans to restaurants, sweatshirts, etc. Everyone spoke English better than I spoke French and were either eager to practice and chat in English, or gracious enough to switch so I was more at ease. The ubiquitous American jock/frat boy is scorned there, regardless of how handsome or popular he is back home.
