I was always under the impression (from having it hammered into my head from men) that men don't really talk to women just for attention alone. They talk to women because they want something from them. So, now I'm wondering why men would bother with catfishing a woman?
On the dating site, this happened to me a lot. 4/5 attractive men who contacted to me first were misrepresenting themselves - mostly about how they looked. It made me wonder a) Why do they do it? and b) What was it about me that made them seek ME out to do it to?

a) Same reason women do it, to try and get more success the lazy/unethical way.

Unless you're catfishing me with your profile pic, it's probably because you are an attractive woman. If you catfish enough attractive women, the numbers say that you'll probably be able to get some nudes from a couple of them. That or these are married guys who are just tinkering around with the idea of an affair but have to do so anonymously and don't really have the stones to follow through. Or they are just losers who live in a fantasy world.
What everyone else said, though I will never understand why anyone thinks that they can use an attractive picture when they're not (as) attractive and think that their winning personality will win the person over.
I notice the guys and girls on Catfish(the show) are usually unattractive, overweight/obese, have low self esteem and receive little to no attention from the opposite sex (though they do want attention).
And the only way to receive some attention is by using fake pics and creating a fake persona online. Kinda sad and pathetic
But in the year 2014 where reverse searches are easy I have no sympathy for the people being catfished.
But some might do it to get back at someone or to mock another person

a) more success at what? getting attention alone? that's why I mentioned in my OP that I was always under the impression that men don't care about getting attention from women if it's not going to result in anything?
The same reason women do it. They lack confidence, and think if I get him to like me 1st, then my physical appearance isn't as important
