My boss was grumbling about how this partner at the firm screwed her way to the top. Is this common?

That people grumble about it or that it actually happens? When it happens, do you think people publicize it?

I think it's about as real as affirmative action hires being unqualified. That is, it rarely happens IRL and is mostly a lie that privileged folks tell themselves.

Affirmatve actions is idiotic. I don;t need some policy to have a career.

Using sex to get promotions or exponential increase in salary is quite common in the workplace. And its just not women who do it but men as well.

I don't think its at all common. The women I know in top jobs got there through career accomplishments. I've known a woman who got an entry level job somewhere, over someone who was more qualified, because her boyfriend was doing the hiring. The only other time I've heard of someone doing something similar, it was a man who was having an affair with the female supervisor.

As for sleeping your way to the "top", though, especially if you started at a low rank and had a lot of rungs to climb in the career ladder. The "top" jobs are usually hired by a board or something similar, so what would they do, sleep with the whole board, or try to figure out who was the key swing vote and try to seduce that person, or...??? I can't picture a woman sleeping her way to Supreme Court Justice, or CEO of a large company, or University president...

People are so competitive in the workplace, both men and women... everyone knows if someone has had an affair, and then that person becomes the focus of resentment (at all levels, colleagues and other supervisors)... and has an invisible target painted on their back... so anyone who wanted to go that route to get ahead would be a bit foolish.

So is your question how common it is to have suspicions that someone slept their way to the top? Care to clarify?
