Improve your present. If you are truly happy and satisfied with where your life is, currently, that past matters less and less.

Building off of that, take up meditation - it helps one to live in the present rather than the past. I have a tendency to dwell on my previous mistakes and beat myself up about them. Over and over and over again.

Meditation helps me to push those negative thoughts out of my head and center on the "now" - so I can get on with this business of living.

Give it a try. There's a book called "Wherever You Go, There You Are" which is written by a well-known expert in meditation. It's very digestible, easy to understand, etc.

Hey, just wanted to second this idea. I don't really do "meditation" but I do self hypnosis and it's pretty similar really. This is the article I originally found to teach myself how to do this. It's pretty simple really. You might have to do it a few times and it won't make you forget anything so much as push memories so far to the background that they seem much older than they are... long ago and not so important anymore.
