I have not done online dating myself, but a few of my friends have. I have learned that there are serial online daters...they don't want to meet you, or spend money on you, or have a relationship beyond an online one. Then, there are some who only want to talk on and on about their dead wife, or ex wife. Then there are those who will meet you for coffee in sweat pants.
My point is, there are good men out there, but do not be too quick to meet them until you have written back and forth A LOT. My friend wound up marrying someone she met on eharmony, but she had more than a few real duds first, and she spent 5 years dating him.

I'm barely average looking (on my best day) and found multiple LT relationships with quality, educated and good looking (thin to average) women over the years. If you approach it correctly.

I believe that it depends on your age range, too. How old are you? Didn't you you say you were in your 40s?
I think it's a lot more difficult when you're younger, because people in their 20s are all about exploration and figuring out who they are. They are also pickier, because they have time to be. Once people start getting into their 30s and 40s, they generally know more about themselves and aren't going to be so quick to leave a person in the dust over something very petty because they know the crap that awaits them around the corner (unlike you, most people I know personally dislike dating). Also, you have the biological clock factor. Let's put it this way. I struggle with women my age or younger, but there are a few 40-somethings who have all but thrown themselves at me in the past year. Now, that don't make no sense to me. Why is it that a 40-something thinks I'm the bee's knees while the late-20s, early-30s girls don't return my text messages?
Of course, I'm speaking from my own personal experience. YMMV as always.

I had success with it in my 30s, say 32-40. I haven't done OLD in the past 2-3 years really. Not seriously. In my 20s I was going out a lot, in undergrad, then working 22-28 full time (and going out), then grad school, so I just met people at shows/parties, etc. Of course, OLD wasn't really big then either or I might have tried it, I don't know.
I have dated with a lot of women from tinder. I start by saying Hi or commenting about something they put in their profile. If they respond back, the are probably atleast curious and not un interested. Then we get into where you from, what do you do for work, kids, bla bla bla. Then I finally ask them what type of relationship they are looking for and if we are still talking its a 50% shot when I say lets exchange numbers and chat some more then maybe we can meet up for lunch and see if we are a match.
