I've been out of circulation for quite some time, so I'm out of the loop on something that I've noticed when trying out online dating, or the few times I've been flirted with in person in the past few years:

These days, men seem to ask women out for coffee.
Back in my day, it was usually, if not lunch or dinner, out for cocktails at a bar.

Why has that changed? I know things evolve with time, like fashion and music, and I guess even the dating scene changes. I'm curious to see if anyone knows why. I've never liked coffee. A coffee meeting sounds about as social and sexy as a business meeting. Meeting at a bar for drinks would seem more flirty.

Also more risky.

These days with so many people meeting online first woman in particular are just more cautious not to let alcohol be involved in the first few actual meetings with a virtual stranger

Dinner and alcohol can be quite costly these days, especially if the guy is picking up the tab and going on multiple dates.

Agreed. I would prefer that, as I am not a drinker, nor would I care for a guy who's a heavy drinker. I had enough of drunks. So, if the bar only served alcohol, I guess I wouldn't be drinking, unless I brought my own. So, coffee seems more relaxed.

Myself being a non drinking alcoholic I would definitely choose coffee over a bar and have done so for about 40 years now.

In my opinion it is safer, the lighting is much better, you generally don't have to shout over loud music or loud patrons in a coffee shop and it does not tempt me to have alcohol.

Preference.

If I want to drink, home is where it's at. Coffee is far more suitable and more my speed.

Yeah, you wanna feel somebody out first before you drop $60.

Or $100 dollar or more if you go to a nice place.

the other thing is that these days people dont want to lose control on the first "date" anymore. it is too easy to go out for a drink, and end up drinking a bit too much, and lose your inhibitions, and do things you didnt intend to do on a first date.
