No, I think the 80/20 "theory" (if you even want to call it that) is absolute BS and have said so many times on this forum.
It's not that there is a scarcity of people out there-- it's that there is a finite number of people that any given person wants to date. (Because, as you say, not everyone is a catch.) If I'm one of five guys who is interested in five women, and the other four guys are imbeciles, I'm going to get my pick of the five women just by not being an imbecile. If the other four guys are awesome, I'm going to have to step up my game or hope I really like the one woman who is left.
This is just basic supply and demand-- it's not a theory of mine or something I even think about that often. I'm just saying I'm thankful for the guys who make the rest of us look good by comparison.
