I used to think it was a New England snobbery thing. May sound odd to most, but i am one of the few with brown eyes in my area- most people have blue. So i always figure this was probably why i was always asked this.
But I recently went to Reno for 5 days and was asked this literally 6 times in 5 days. There was certainly more diversity there than New England so i was surprised to be asked so much. FYI- their guesses were never accurate and i was asked by all different races.
Pick up line? Small talk? Etc?
Any thoughts? (Besides the obligitaory "get over yourself" rude and insulting comments which usually makes me stay away from this subforum?)
I went through similar My father is Russian and mother is a Ceylonese. So best to say I am Russian Asian born in Los Angeles. Live in The Netherlands. I gave up my US citizenship since I become a Dutch Nationality. But as you mentioned I am tired of answering the question "where are you from?" Most funny case is once guy from Arab airlines asked me "why I am not using a burka. So I think assumed I am some where from their country.
Not. I don't guess, as I hear it tons, have people stare at me, due to my unusual look. When I was younger, most people assume I am white. Wrong. I'm black, but have albinism. So, skin has no color, hair i blonde, and eyes are green.
It's mainly annoying. lol Apparently nobody has ever heard of it, then you have to explain it, etc. Or, once again, maybe that's just where I live where everyone is ignorant.
I get asked quite frequently what I am racially, when it is quite obvious I am African American. People assume I am east asian or a mix of black and asian or black and white. I find it funny. Sometimes.

Race is different than Nationality, but overall the same conclusion can be made, nope, not a pickup line.
