Emotional can be even worse I'd say. Once you're throwing your heart at someone else it can be a downward spiral fast. Both are equal though. Emotional is just more subjective and harder to measure. So if it involves doing something or saying something your spouse wouldn't approve of its not a good idea.
Potentially more dangerous than mere physical contact.
If there is an emotional connection which, if strong enough, is fairly likely to lead to physical intimacy, the chances increase exponentially for said relationship to result in dissolution of one's marriage.
Sex is just sex, and usually a marriage can more likely recover from one partner straying if it was just a physical thing.
I would say that emotional is worse. If my husband had a physical affair, I would dump him quickly. But if it was emotional, I can see the marriage dragging on a lot longer than it would need to be. The end result would probably be a break up anyway.
Worse. It's harder to break an emotional bond than one merely held together by temporary lust for sex.
