It just pains me to think that the 50 Shades author is making all this money off of something that started off as a Twilight fanfic. I've written fanfic myself (not about Twilight) and I'm not a millionaire!
You lacked the erotic (sexual?) content to explode the charts .
You would be suprised how much females respond to overly wordy suggestion.
It's more of a "omg I can't believe I am reading/hearing this" than it is its about the actual technical or art of the writing.
I would also imagine this is a gateway for many who would never have picked up any form of erotica if not for its wide spread acceptance making it "ok" to do so.
Your last point is probably very true. I actually don't read much that would be considered erotica, it's just not my thing. If people enjoy these books, more power to 'em!
I've read a lot. 50 Shades of Grey is still very erotic.
I don't know why some are so embarrassed to admit that it is erotic.
Because it's not really particularly erotic and the writing is terrible? I suppose if one lacked a proper grasp of English grammar and syntax, it could be more enjoyable as a light read. But, one would have to overlook the fact that he bullied her into a relationship that she didn't understand and before she could escape him, he pressured her into marrying him and then conveniently forgot to remind her about the birth control he was initially obsessed about until she got pregnant. LOL.
Yes... highly erotic. Especially with all that inner goddess/subconscious backflipping and doing a salsa or whatever while the heroine refers to her vagina as "down there" and keeps reminding us that there are foil packets being ripped open.
Because condoms are HOT people. HOT.
It's hardly a bodice ripper.
I found it psychologically interesting in that I was hoping for her to explain why Christian was so messed up (and how that had anything in the world to do with BDSM), but it turned out to be a case of him being raped and beaten repeatedly by an adult and screwing up his mind.
Nope... that's not much of a turn on.
(I did read it. Skim it, to be exact. All three of those things. I am now fully authorized to critique it.)

On top of that, Ana is totally unlikeable. Not at all sexy, not at all relatable, kind of a beeyotch to her friend Kate. She's self-absorbed and has very few redeeming qualities.
Now I like reading erotica as much as the next girl but seriously...it was just awful. Throughout the whole book I was thinking "skank, if you bite your lip one more time...!" *shakes fist menacingly*

Well I only read the erotic sections from the 1st one. But in the movie she wasn't bullied into anything. Seduced, perhaps. But not bullied or pressured.

Ah man you fail as a pervert. Condoms are very hot. Despite being a virgin, I have a secret anecdote about that but it wouldn't be appropriate for the forum lmao.
Not really. I turned my girl loose to watch it with one of her friends who was pestering her to come along because her boyfriend had no interest in it. She didn't even really have any interest in it (the "save me" text I got halfway through the movie was predictable) but went along anyway to be a good friend.

The most erotic part is the BDSM aspect.
I suspect this sort of thinking is why it's popular in the Bible Belt.
