I agree CSD, dinner date can mean so many things and it's not fair to make ill informed assumptions. Also, I'll advice against following behindthescreen post as that will put you jasn in an awkward position as they aren't together.

It could be anything. We have no idea. It is probably a date date I would think, but people use that term differently. The point is it doesn't really matter.
If you want to overstep boundaries and be intrusive and inquire further, go ahead. Anything else is guesswork.
but couldn't it be a dinner date with a girlfriend?
I've never heard "dinner date" used in any way other than what you're thinking. No, she's not having dinner with her mom or girlfriend. That's "dinner plans" or "going out to dinner." Dating is dating--you don't date your mom.
I think dating multiple people is fine, so I think you should ask her out anyway. If she wanted to shut you down, she would have said the word "boyfriend" or "I'm seeing someone."

Oh, I've heard people use things such as "lunch date" to mean they're having lunch with a friend. That isn't uncommon.
Okay, that makes sense, but dinner date?? I still think it's a date-date, like you said.
