I was watching an episode of the Brady Bunch and one of the comments was Alice wondering if they would get married and it made me think. I know it's a show but looking at their relationship is interesting because of the dynamics. Alice has never been married and no kids (she's mentioned this before), and I assume the same of Sam (never mentioned I dont think but I think it was implied he was a lifelong bachelor). Kids are probably out of the future as I believe they were late 40's. Alice is desperate to marry but Sam hems about it. Other times he's too busy to take her out. Also on many episodes they almost seem to have more of a friendship.

My point is that I wonder if these situations are based on reality. Incidentally by a later spin off they were married so it paid off for her. I know it's a show but that relationship seems more realistic than between Mike and Carol.

I think the episode that got cancelled was ..... "alice in wonderland"

alice would come over to sam's butcher shop and in the basement, they would smoke dope and were swingers,
alice gets pregnant, but doesn't know who the exact father is,, but sam, being the good hearted butcher doesn't care, he will raise the kid as his own,,, which seals the deal for alice, and they get married....
carol is so happy for alice, but silently jealous, mike hasn't touched her in 5 years, she's getting suspicious...
this is the only episode the familiar opening jingle isn't played, instead ,,, it's white rabbit by the Jefferson airplane

That would be an interesting episode. Reminds me when someone posted a "leaked" episode guide if there was a sixth season and it had to do with those things. Not true of course but funny.

Alice was an anachronism.

People in the 60s--70s did not have maids and servants. Only in later years, when a ruling class re-emerged in the US, did upper middle class families like the Bradys have maids and servants. In the 60's-70's the stay-at-home mom and kids would have done the cleaning and chores, and dad would have mowed the lawn.

That's not entirely true. I knew a few people who grew up during that time and their parents had maids.

Furthermore, you are completely missing the point of the thread.

Not true at all. I knew a lot of families in the 70s who had maids, and one that had a butler! But he had been with that family for a couple decades.

We don't know the backstory of Alice and Sam's lives, and so we cannot assume Sam was never married.

Lol, this thread is funny, because I caught an episode over the weekend and their relationship, too, left a weird impression on me. ~ Alice was expecting Sam to escort her to some stupid Brady-kid school function, so she asks what time he'll pick her up and he says he's sorry but his bowling league has an important game that night. She gets all mad and breaks up with him! I didn't watch the rest, but I was thinking "Dang, what a selfish b . . . . ! "

Is that the same episode where he locked Greg and Bobby in the freezer so he could get it on with Alice?

When I was single and living in an apartment building, one of my neighbors was a woman who was in her late 50s. She and I would exchange pleasantries. On Sundays, her boyfriend would arrive, wearing his accustomed tweed jacket and bowtie. He looked and acted like Howard Sprague, the city clerk on the Andy Griffith Show.

One Sunday, I was out front reading and she strolls up and hands me a wedding invitation. They finally tied the knot after 27 years of dating. At the time, they had been dating longer than I had been alive. Mercifully, I didn't say that.

So, yeah, there are some people who take their sweet time.
