Does spontaneously having dinner with a girl you just met count as a date, or just hanging out with them alone for a few hours? Or does it have to be planned in advance to count as a "date"?
It's not a date unless mutually agreed upon. For example, if you are working on a project with a woman from class and get a pizza, it's not a date unless she thinks it is too.
I have an old Miss Manners book that says dating involves 1) romance, 2) entertainment, and 3) food. She acknowledges that as dating progresses, romance might be the entertainment.
I don't usually regard hanging out on a couch, watching a movie, cuddling, etc. to be a date. Maybe if you cook dinner and there is a sort of occasion about it, but "going on a date" implies to me that people "go" somewhere.
"Spontaneously hanging out for a couple hours" does not sound like a date to me, but if she thinks it was and so do you--there you go, that was a date.

It depends on your future interactions with this person. If you end up being in a relationship with this person, you can always go the revisionist history way and deem that first meeting whatever your heart desires. People who are good with dating tend to be able to turn any type of meeting into a date or at least an opportunity. Trust me on this.
Hanging out with a group isn't a date. Hanging out as a couple may, or may not. A date can be anything; roller-skating in the park, bike riding, a museum visit. It usually involves making a decision in advance about doing an activity or going somewhere together. If you're just finished class, and someone says, hey, want to go get a pizza, that may or may not be a date. But probably not. lol I'm leaning towards, "planning in advance" has to be involved for it to be a date.
