I know a lot of fun governors try to say STDS! STDS! STDS! As a reason for not having sex. The preceding is a great article about the absurdity of this argument. Point being: go out and have sex! It's fun!
Very interesting perspective...I'd want some outside confirmation on some of his statistics. What strikes me as particularly questionable is that it takes (on average) 100 unprotected encounters for a pregnancy to occur. Well, we all know it's unlikely for someone to get pregnant after having sex just once or even a few times (ever TRY to get pregnant?...it can take a few months of relatively frequent sex). 100 seems quite high, especially if both people are relatively fertile.
The viewpoint on symptoms and long-term effects is skewed toward men such that women tend to experience the brunt of ill effects with more likely reduced future fertility from some of these, but it's good to get some information on how treatable most all STIs are so a great read!
Many people today aren't very fertile. For example, well-documented dropping testosterone levels in men.
I don't believe the claim that syphilis is extremely rare. Statistics on STDs in general are outdated, and almost every STD is increasing in frequency. Occasionally the media admits we're in an epidemic, but I guess the news is overlooked in today's anything-not-criminal-goes atmosphere. Not to mention that STDs are a burden on the health-care system, especially if not treated quickly.
