This idea has been floating around for a long time.... possibly started with Freud. Now a recent study from Finland leans this way. Incidentally, it does not seem to work the same for women... that they are attracted to men that resemble their dads..... but who's to say?
Guys, do you think this is true?
Gals, do you prefer that your SO resemble your dad?
Well, let's see...my MIL is five feet tall and petite, with blonde hair. I'm ten inches taller and curvaceous, with brown hair.
My husband and my dad...both have blue eyes. That's about all in common there, appearance-wise.
I would say that my mother-in-law and I are very temperamentally alike, and have a similar sense of humor. The same goes for my dad and husband...they have very similar personalities. I think this is far more of a factor than any visual similarities. Each of us married people who behave quite similiarly to our family members, and have very similar values.
God, I hope I don't look like my MIL! I, unfortunately, do share some personality traits with her. I hope that's not what my husband likes about me though, because in all honesty, those are the aspects of my own personality I really dislike. I'm nowhere near as cold and self-centered as she is, luckily.
As for my husband, he doesn't look anything like my dad, but he has some similar traits, I guess. They are both very good at engineering things, both smart, both handy around the house, both perfectionists to some degree, etc. Those traits I do like. What's really great is that my husband doesn't have my dad's bad traits (like being WAY too loud).
I look nothing like my husband's mom and I am probably the polar opposite of her in personality.
I thought Freud just said men want to boff their moms, not date someone who looks like her.
More or less. Here's how Freud thought of it...
Quote:
The term Oedipus complex (or, less commonly, Oedipal complex) denotes the emotions and ideas that the mind keeps in the unconscious, via dynamic repression, that concentrates upon a child's desire to have sexual relations with the parent of the opposite sex (i.e. males attracted to their mothers, and females attracted to their fathers).[1][2] Sigmund Freud, who coined the term "Oedipus complex" believed that the Oedipus complex is a desire for the parent in both males and females;
Since Freud first came out with the idea, there have been many modifications by others to his original thinking. If you want to see what that's like, check out the article here:
The original article I posted said that "The mother-son connection doesn’t stop at looks," then mentions the Oedipus complex in a dismissive way but then goes on to talk about the part that the early role with mother will play later in life in connecting with women.
I'm not sure if Freud was the first to hint at the mother-son attraction though.

Reason: add last sentence.
We're both brunettes and 5'9", but other than that, no, we don't look alike. I'm half black, and she's white, so... yeah, I probably look half black.
My husband's exes did not look like his mom, either.
Both my dad and husband are tall, 6'3" and 6'2" respectively, and part Italian, but they don't look alike. My first husband resembles nothing of my father. My first husband is 5'10", blond hair, blue eyes, fairer skin, and my dad has (genetically) dark brown hair, olive complexion, and green eyes.
