Some states have a database to look up such things along w/ any professions that require a license. Check on the county site first if you know what county they could have used. I'd also check neighboring counties. I've found my own marriage recorded online along w/ my parents. If your trying to find out if they then filed for divorce the same site should have that available.
Do you know the county where the person lives, or the county where they would have gotten married? If so, check for the records online, or just call up the county clerk and see what it would take to send you the info. It's all public record.
Ive used the old trick, in starting up a conversation. Once you get to talking to the person, you simply ask something about their wife/girlfriend. Maybe something like asking 'does your wife back you up in the work you do or does she disagree with it?' He'll tell you there whether she agrees with him, or if he doesnt have one, he'll tell you 'I dont have a wife'.
I discovered that many years ago when I ran my homecleaning business, went to go do an estimate on a guys house and I just melted when he opened the door. After the walk through I just had to ask if his wife came in and saw me there would it create a problem? He told me he lived by himself, hie ex-wife moved out 3 years prior. Thats why he needed a housekeeper a couple times a month. WOWSA, he just made himself open season here!!! Needless to say, not only did he hire me, but we dated for quite awhile, before I decided to move onto becoming a truck driver.
We've kept in touch from time to time over the years but he sold that house and we've lost contact as time spread out.... ^sigh^ .

Good point but I know lots of guys/ladies who dont/wont wear one.
