I am good friends with a male coworker, who is not my boss, but he is much more senior than me and also senior than my boss (in terms of rank/status). We often meet in the office and chat about work, career. I came to know through some of my friends that we have now become a subject of office gossip. Infact, people have started asking me questions about him. I was really upset when I came to know that people are gossiping about us, and I wasn't sure if he knew anything about this. When I told him about this, I got an unexpected reaction from him. He started laughing and then he said we are not in high school anymore to care about people gossiping about us, people will always talk when they see a guy chatting with a girl but I should just ignore such people and their comments. Being in a situation like this, is very upsetting to me, but his reaction makes me think if I am overreacting? He is 10 years older than me and probably knows how to handle a situation like this in a better way.
Your friend is correct - office gossip is ludicrous and a huge waste of time to even think about. Who cares what those people who don't have a life want to talk about?
We are just good friends who like talking to each other. At some point, I guess I was attracted to him but I decided not to act on my feelings because of the age difference.

OP:
If you were attracted to him, then you wanted more than friendship.
So you really cannot claim that you are just a friend of his since you wanted more at one point. You were pining for him even if you did not act upon your feelings for him.
Does he know about this?
