I think what struck me was that the original concept of chivalry was founded on an imbalance of power and was designed to keep the people with power in check so they didn't turn into absolute dicks. So in a way, chivalry is kind of an outdated/foreign concept because we're Americans in an (at least in theory) egalitarian society. To Chow's point, I think it's just better to say you value kindness and good manners rather than evoking images of feudalism.

I think we need chivalry now more than ever, but getting into that would be a bit off-topic. Suffice to say that if money is power, we certainly do need some kind of system to keep the powerful in check.
