Is that really surprising to want to live a trouble free life? When I people ask me why I don't have a gf and I tell them that won't happen they look at me like I'm suffering from an contagious disease.
Where do you live, that people ask such things? No one's ever asked me, or any of my single friends. It's no one's business. Most people have better things to think about, than other people's marital status.
Why worry about it? If you're secure about being single why does what anyone else thinks matter to you?

Just curious - how exactly do you reply to them? Because if you say something like, "Girlfriend? Girls are nothing but trouble! I hate them! They have cooties!!! Yuck!!!" - people might be justified in looking at you strangely.
