Well that's proved not to be the case

As I suspected he went back for it and it was gone, he then had a panic to find something else that was simular and gave it to her.

I don't think he tried to pass it off as the same ring? If it's gone it's gone that's not his fault is it. He's not an idiot in my opinion he's a loving husband that went out of his way to buy his wife a nice gift

I'd think about what he would do if you gave him a gift that didn't suit him. Would he smile and use/wear it anyway? Then I'd do the same. If he'd be honest? Then, presumably he can tolerate the same type of response from you.
