"At work" covers a lot of ground. When I was in college, I had an on-campus janitor job. I worked in a building with several other janitors, both half-time student workers and full-time non-student workers.

Each of us was assigned different tasks in different areas of the building; we all worked separately from each other and not together.

Another student janitor hit on me and we dated. Had zero impact on our jobs as at work we saw each other only at punch-in and punch-out. Does this no-no really apply to work environments like mine or only where the co-workers actually interact in the workspace?

You end up spending time with your work mates more than you would your out of work friends so it's hardly surprising that feelings can develop.
