For Online Dating Do You Send/Receive Messages More Like E-mails or Instant Messages? (looking, serious)

With some exceptions it's mostly been like e-mails for me. Although I've heard like instant messages can be even more successful. Anyone care to share?

I prefer more of an email exchange, where you can learn about the other person. The whole "Hi." "Hi." "What's up." approach is too lazy and takes too much time for me.

Generally most IM's I send are ignored. Much more success sending e-mails, but no still the return response rate is very low with OLD.

I never understood the requests to "chat". I find that implies a sense of immediacy and almost kind of creepy. "Hey babe, wanna chat"? Uhhh, no!

What is more successful after exchanging e-mail or IM is to ask for a real life date...unless you want a pen pal

Talking response rates which lead to real life meets. No one serious about online dating (or as serious about it as you can be) wants a pen pal.
