That's a broad subject to which you have applied no limitations. In some cases it is, in some cases it's not.

And, yes, I do believe it's absolutely fair in certain circumstances.
Backward in a sense that these days women can work just about the same jobs men do so I do not see any reason why a men should keep paying for a women he's no longer has ties to. The women "homemaker" days are long gone.
In my case it seemed fair to me! We had planned all along that I would be a stay at home mom, and then he cheated. I was almost finished with my master's degree when things fell apart. So I finished and started working full time which was hard on the kids (because he was never around). It never occurred to me to insist that I be paid to continue to stay home.
I got alimony for 2 years ONLY, as per NY state law. I may have been able to sue for more but I was too proud to pursue it.
Since then I've moved to NC and am stunned to meet men who are paying alimony for many many years, to wives who are gainfully employed professionals. I just don't get it. I think NY has it right...get you on your feet, then cut you loose. Child support is completely separate, and my ex is NOT paying what he agreed to pay. He has weaseled out of that every way he could think of.
I'm still struggling financially, 10 years later, but at least I do it on my own terms and make my own decisions. My husband was (and still is) very manipulative with money, and I'm happy to be free of him even if it means living in poverty (literally).

Ahh, I see, so your ostensibly "gender neutral" question is not so gender neutral.

The question was gender neutral and now you are changing it.

I'm not changing anything, this was just an example.
