OK so I admit I may be somewhat outta practice in going to social parties and/or clubbing (only been to about 4-5 in the past few years ). But one thing that has always somewhat stumped me a lil is, in all of the parties I actually have been to thus far over the years, there has usually only been one (or very rarely, at most 2) token slow dances or slow jams --and even these were only marginally or nominally "slow" (not "true" Soft AC). Everything else was much harder, much louder Hot AC / hip-hop / rap.

Why is this always the case? I have wondered about this for the longest time...is it b/c slow dances are simply considered "uncool" or "unhip"? Not trying to ask a "dumb" question here...honestly just curious as to why...

(I actually prefer slow dances to "fast" dances...much more romantic, to slow-dance in your sweetie's arms! )

My guess is that fast music is simply preferred by most of the people who frequent the venues that you've been to. I haven't recently been to a public venue, such as a club, where people dance. Perhaps the fast music keeps a greater number of people out on the dance floor. When the slow dances come along, then all of the non-romantic couples are going to sit them out.

Maybe you could crash some wedding receptions - there's always some slow dance music played at those!

Wow. I don't think I have been to a private party with pre-arranged dancing since I was in college. Are you talking about wedding receptions? Because those always seem to have plenty of slow, romantic numbers.

Most of the parties I go to, the dancing is just sort of spontaneous and dependent on who has commandeered the sound system.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions my friend!

Not weddings -- I haven't been to any wedding receptions in quite a few years, lol

I guess what I'm talking about is the kind of music they play when you go to things like New Year's parties, and clubs / pubs / etc. Even when they actually play "slow(er)" songs, they tend to be toned-down rock/pop songs from artists like Journey, Billy Joel, etc., at least in my exp. thus far. But not true Soft AC (as in, real love songs or love ballads, from artists like say Jim Brickman)

Ah yes, I miss the opportunity to grope, fondle, and pet my dancing partner.

I'd imagine it's because men don't know (or even want to know) their best interests here, which manifests itself time and again every day. Our guys in HS and college certainly played them all the time (even though they were mostly rock/metal ballads, they weren't exactly the preference of these metal heads if it weren't for the advantages) and made sure to turn off the overhead lights.
