So...
for the life of me...I can't seem to fathom the idea of all of us questioning the possibility of people starting threads in here for attention, or whatever?

I know some have, i.e. that writer who I might add, had a lot of us going by his expertise in writing....plus I enjoyed reading his story, fictional or not, he was a great writer......

what I can't understand is the process of members in here trying to guess if they are trolls or not and actually posting that on their threads?

I'm honestly not trying to be contrary, or attack anyone....but for the life of me, please help me understand why we would take the chance of really hurting someone's feelings by posting on their thread, that they could be a troll? What if they are not? Then, we've really hurt someone's feelings after they spilled their guts out asking for help?

And someone please help me understand, what does it matter if they are trolls or not???? I'm sorry, I just don't get it, can someone help by explaining?

To be honest, some of you might remember my first post in CD when I was looking for advice about my DIL....and to tell you the truth, if someone had suggested on my thread, that I was a troll, it would have added insult to injury....I would have really been hurt....not to mention, put in a position where I'd have to defend my post....I don't think that's very nice or fair.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I don't understand, what does it really matter if they are trolling or not?

In other words, being suspicious that someone is a troll, takes away the innocence and belief of us, doesn't it?

Thanks so much
Creme

I am not sure who you are thinking of with this post but I am thinking of a person who has both protrayed himself to be male and female. Their posts were not contributing anything. They were funny at times but misleading. Even to the point of pointless and at times rude and nasty.

Personally I grew tired of them and put the person on ignore.

When I post a topic, I would like honest and sincere responses, not someone pretending to be a woman when they are not, pretending to be from another country when they are not, someone pretending to have experience to justify a certain opinion when they don't have that experience.

wull yes, Lindsey, while I agree with you whole heartidly...we can usually pick out those who are not sincere, or are argumentative....and simply ignore them...not everyone is going to agree with us, so that is also a factor, but in the end result....Lindsey, what does it really matter, when we absolutely know that most here are sincere and caring....and one person makes a really dumb or opinionated statement, simply b/c maybe they've taken it personally or are a troll....what I'm saying, is, why accuse someone of being something they might not be....and what does it really matter if they are a troll? Ignore them, right? Why get nasty or say hurtful words like that, cuz what if there is the slightest chance they are not...wouldn't it be better to simply ignore them, rather then chance hurting someone who really isn't a troll?

Trolling can destroy a forum, literally.
Most people are sincere and well-meaning. Throw a few malicious trolls into the mix, to harrass the majority, and you have a rapidly declining message board.
I've seen trolls post other poster's personal information and where they live.
Some of them are downright unbalanced.
I had a girl troll me for a while on another, now defunct, forum.
She somehow found a photo of me and photoshopped it onto a porn star's body......then posted it online.
She eventually single-handedly destroyed a huge board, where I used to post.

People troll message boards for a number of reasons-- self esteem issues, boredom, the need of an ego boost, or immaturity. On the other hand, there are some people who have some very bizzare and unfortunate real life problems that may make them seem like a troll.

The way I personally combat the troll issue is the same way I combat any issue--with complete and utter honesty. If someone says or does something stupid, I call them out on it regardless of whether their issue is a reality or something conjured from imagination. I dismiss the thought of being more sympathetic to nontrolls than to trolls because quite frankly, you can't ever tell on the internet. Both types of people come to a forum to get input and opinions and if they can't handle input they don't like to hear, then it was their fault that they came in the first place.

Honesty---keeping trolls in check and keeping one true to one's beliefs since 1985

Well, I like to try to give people the benefit of the doubt. But, with some, it is painfully obvious that they are only trying to stir up trouble. And the other poster is right. It doesn't take many trolls to have otherwise good people hurling insults at each other. Anyone can go to just about anything on the [domain blocked due to spam] forums, and see true bullsh*t in progress. And, if this forum ever becomes like those, I will find better things to do than be in the middle of a bunch of heated argument ignorant junk. I am glad people on here call things the way they see it. Oh, and be glad we have moderators too. Boards that don't are pretty ulgy at times. Thats my nickels worth!!

I actually had a troll get my personal information by hacking the website and posting it on the board for all to see. I hadn't even thought about that one in a long time.
