What does she do for a living?
Is she rich?
Is she kind?
Is she a "knockout?"
Is she the most fun person you have been around?

Looking at one aspect of a person and then using that to drive all other judgments just gets you lonely. If the package is great, but sloppy, I can deal with it.

Someone up thread said something about having clear horizontal spaces. What are horizontal spaces for if not to hold things? What's the point of a coffee table, for example, if you can't put a magazine or book or coasters for your drinks on it?

I'm sure there are places in my house that have more dust than they should. We don't move furniture to clean behind it very often, etc. However, no dirty dishes in the sink, no laundry on the floor, vacuum regularly, scrubbed bathrooms... nothing is gross, just full. Would definitely drive neat freak people crazy though.
Everyone has the right to live the way they are comfortable. I live in a small space too, and therefore make an effort to keep possessions and clutter at a minimum. It feels bigger when it's not full.

A magazine and/or a book (not a stack of books, magazines and papers) and coasters are fine for a coffee table, in my opinion. I also keep a vase of fresh flowers on my coffee table. But once I'm done with a book or magazine, it is removed from my universe, I don't keep them around. I sort through my mail every day and handle it only once - if it requires an action, I complete the action and everything else is tossed. Other horizontal surfaces, such as end tables and consoles are also kept free of clutter.

I like to keep horizontal spaces clear in my kitchen for work surfaces. The kitchen counters are not where the mail belongs, or keys, or rubber bands, or flashlights, or bags. I always seem to have more things on my kitchen counters than I prefer, I make a daily effort to keep it free from clutter. For example, right now on my kitchen counter there is a fruit bowl, a blender, a coffee pot, a knife rack, and a cutting board. I'd like for there to be less, so the knife rack is on my list of things to get rid of (in favor of a magnetic strip on the wall), and I could probably start putting away the cutting board too.

My sister and BF are messy... by my standards.

But OMG are they busy. She travels most weeks of the month and he is renovating their house... I mean like big time stuff all the time.

They don't care about messes, and there is nothing wrong with that. They live there, and they are happy.

Especially in a crowded bar surrounded by all kinds of people and smells? Not buying it.

I am intimately involved with the substance on a regular basis (I'm married.. it's my job ) and if I don't know what random love juice smells like..... why does this guy?

Why does this remind me of "There's something about Mary?"

Someone being a slob would be a definite deal breaker for me. I'm sure it's a bone of contention in many marriages.

Talking about people who don't put things away and instead clutter every inch of horizontal space with crap.
Also knickknacks everywhere (esp if they don't get dusted). Interrupted lines make a place feel more crowded.

I'm OCD on hygiene, too. How many men you know or heard of that dilutes their body wash with bleach? or use 1:1 water/bleach with a spray gun, sprayed on toilet paper/paper towel to wipe up after using the toilet?

Yeah, that's me
