Is it feminine for a guy to ask the woman for a commitment first? (dating, girlfriend)

I have heard guys say that a man should just keep dating a woman until she asks for a commitment first and that if a guy is the first one to ask for a commitment from a woman than he is feminine. What do you think about this? Guys, in your relationships with women, who brought up the idea of you two becoming a couple first..was it you or the woman?

If I want it, I ask. If they do ask, they ask. I'm not going to worry about appearing "feminine" or some other such nonsense. I can't imagine anyone I'm attracted to caring about such dynamics.

I've ended relationships, and had relationships end on me, for one of us turning down exclusivity. That is hardly a far fetched notion.

Well, I asked her to marry me, she asked for more time, then later she asked me and I said yes. That was 30 years ago. Still married. I don't think of myself as a particularly "feminine" guy.
I think y'all are spending too much time worrying about "doing it the right way" and not enough time being here now.
