Its ok to be reserved but to be so isolating that you don't communicate nor share yourself with your partner is going to be a red flag in my book.

Communication is the only way to build connection. If your boyfriend won't communicate, your relationship will stay exactly as it is. It will not grow into a true connection between authentic people.

A possible remedy is to create positive communication experiences together. Set aside private time specifically to talk. Start in listening mode. Ask him a question that you would enjoy a detailed answer to. Listen actively, focusing your attention on his answer, nodding to show engagement, checking for understanding from time to time. Do not try to respond with a similar story of your own. Encourage him to ask you a question, and ask him just to listen to your answer. Explain to him that you want to be more deeply connected with him, to know him better and to be yourself with him.

This approach to conversation is sometimes called Mindful Communication. I encourage you to learn more about this approach.
