I was being facetious I would never go to one.
If I'm bored I pick a guy off Plenty of Fish and meet him at one of the cute little bars around where I live, bc I like to go to new places and no, I don't expect anybody to buy me anything. It's nice to have somebody to go out with, especially if you get to pick which one!
Hahaha, life is so fabulous as a woman!😺
Interesting, I've gone the opposite direction as I gave up on online dating last year. I've scored more dates at Meetup than I did online. lol Prefer the face-to-face interaction. Otherwise, you're just a pool of guys sitting on a woman's inbox. At Meetup, you won't be ignored. ;-)

What was the Meetup? How many women did you approach while there?
Chow's comment about living in the bible belt does contribute a lot to why I think the way I do. Too many people here make the same choices and end up in the same hole their parents were in. So I just said screw it. Not worth my time. But I don't go to meet up events nor am I looking for anyone to date. So it's hard to say what she's doing. I guess she just wants friends.
She said she has a rich social life and a nice inner circle of friends outside of Meetup already. Sounds like Meetup is just a supplement to that.
Your friend was repeating a quote from Jane Fonda, and lifted her words verbatim from an interview wherein she said that she was "turning eighty and had closed up shop down there," in answer to a question from the interviewer as to whether or not she was dating anyone.

Does it matter? I talk to both men and women at the events. I actually avoid the exclusive singles events and just attend regular social club events. It's kind of the same either way, because the organizer of the one I most frequent said someone approached her, griping about the lack of men in her group. lol. They said she should put on a singles Meetup. She said, "Well, we have single people here anyways, so it'd be redundant."
Sadly, a lot of people come and go...quite the revolving door, so they show up once or twice...then you never see them again. Some are busy jumping around to various Meetups.
Yet you gave him your phone # for him to contact you? That's on you.
Sure, he wanted to “pursue a friendship.”
And after he figured out that i didn’t mean dating, and actually meant what I had told him (gasp!, that I was seeing someone and friendship actually meant friendship, he stopped wanting to “be friends.”
It is not always singles at meetup events, but it usually is.
