In general, seeking information is not a bad thing. I'm not sure why some are posting 'leave now' she 'deserves better', simply for seeking info. Now, if it's because some find OP controversial, then fine.

Some members want to turn this into an agenda topic. They're stating their own opinions about whether or not it's a good idea to date single mothers. Some of the replies appear to be single mother bashing to me. (IMO) The OP didn't ask for advice about that.
OP stated he was concerned, and has already received his answer: "Why don't you just ask her?"
OP, you are asking a bunch of people who don't have your answer for you. Only one person can address your concerns about dating her. I'm assuming you have at least some conversational and social skills. Just ask.
Okay, now we can start betting on whether this topic will hit 100 posts, or when.

Here's my issue with her being a single mother : There is a chance that it might say something negative about her, her judgment, decision making, etc. Or, and this is definitely also a possibility, or it could just mean bad luck, without it saying anything bad about her as a person.
What I want to do is get rid of this uncertainty by finding out which it is. But of course I want to do it tactfully. How would you suggest I go about this?
OP, if you are even resistant to even having a conversation about the circumstances of her single mother status, quit wasting everyone’s time and keep it moving away from her. I was one of the loudest opponents of dating single mothers as any regular here will attest. I got into a LDR with a single mother last year, we had our issues and I dumped her but her being a single mom turned out to be the least of our worries. I didn’t really care how she got to be a single mom since we all have a past and she was at least willing to give me a chance and not get scared away like every ing girl in DC does. There are single mothers who would make great partners but if that ain’t your thing don’t try to fit a square peg into a round hole for both your sakes.
Make a simple assumption. Everyone is a red flag including you. Proceed from there.

That's right, but how do I find out one way or another?
Uh, you’re kidding right? There is no shortcut, you figure her out by getting to know her.
