I was in an even smaller major. Nobody paid attention to anyone else's social status, etc. Are you sure you're not imagining some of this? It sounds like you feel kind of trapped by everyone's attention, but it may well not be a big deal. In any case, you should do what needs to be done; be upfront with her, but in a kind way.
