Earlier I was talking to a friend who asked me to go out with him and I said I was busy with the wife and after the conversation apparently my wife overheard and said "The wife? Really?" she didn't seem really mad or upset and more kind of joking, but still, it was interesting she brought it up. Would it bother you?

nope! Beats being called "the ole lady", "the other Woman" , "the other Half" . Acknowledging the marital stat is okay. When out and about I often said " This is my Husband , (insert name),"

tone and content do play a part though....

Hey, just add "The Wife" to PC Dictionary.
Problem solved.

I don't know...my husband doesn't use that phrase...it sounds kind of Ralph Kramden-y. I don't think it would bother me all that much; I'd assume he was joking around. When he's being serious he calls me The Goddess.

I say the husband all the time. So nope. We've even been known to say "Hey Wife" or "Hey Husband" once in a while.

I once knew someone who would introduce his spouse as "my first wife" - bah! Hysterical! I wonder if they're still married....

It doesn't sound offensive to me at all. Was she more concerned about you using her as an excuse to get out of a social engagement?

No.

My grandfather thought it was hilarious to refer to my grandmother as "my first wife." Of course he was joking, but compared to that "the wife" is no big deal at all.

I’m not sure if it’s offensive.

Let me go ask the ball and chain.

In such a situation, I'd have to ask my Social Director.
