I have met a few widows who are really up there in age and their husbands have past or wives. It showed you die alone anyways.
Maybe they are comfortable living alone? You don't know about their social life. Perhaps is fullfilling or all what they want...
Living alone doesn't mean one has to die alone, except perhaps - in sleep. But that's actually a very pleasant way to go. It wouldn't be witnessed anyway...

To add, I will never remarry should I find myself a widow. I am perfectly happy with the marriage I have. I was single for a long time before I got married. If I find myself single again, I will be just fine.
I care much more about being someone and doing something than finding someone.
