To all I can imagine many reasons he kept me a secret. I just framed my question around my experience. I know he was using me. I was just more curious about the behavior of a narcissist such as the guy I encountered. Maybe I should have asked the question generally.

Lesson 1, "New" original poster, don't ever be around a narcissist, They suck! Anyone who's ever worked with, had a relationship with, or befriended one will tell you.

Why are you spending any emotional energy on this sick person? Mere interest or educating yourself for self-preservation would not take much time. It seems like more than curiosity. Have you by chance developed a fascination?
Because it make it that much more difficult to go out on "the hunt" for a new supply.
You see a narcissist is always on "the hunt".... It's like a hunger that can not be satisfied.
My gal, had us stacked three deep.Quick insight into their thinking....
Everything mine did was compartmentalized..... There was a Bar not from her house... several times, I suggested stopping there rather than traveling further...
"No... no not there, I don't like that place".
Well, after things "blew up" I learned that that is where she was meeting my replacement.
I was not allowed there... He was not allowed to where I would go with her...
Neither of us knew that there was another place where she was working the third guy.
Truth be told...... Narcissist live in a very dark and corrupt world.
Why waste time trying to put a label on it or figure out why or how? What matters is the unacceptable behavior. Good on you for getting rid of him and put this dude farther and farther in your rear view mirror until he disappears.
