Or even 49 years ago (after the pill but before herpes and AIDS).
Um, just to make a quick point here, there is evidence that herpes has been around since the origins of humanity. It was documented by ancient Greeks and the virus has been found in prehistoric proto-human organic samples. The two main forms of the virus, are ridiculously common, with estimates of HSV-1 infection (as at least "carriers") being as high as 70% of human beings. This is the "cold sores" variety, yet it can be passed from mouth to genitals and vice versa, so that isn't exactly less of an STI just because many who have it were infected by sharing food or drink or being kissed by adults when they were small children.
However, attaching such absurd levels of stigma to HSV? Yeah, that's relatively new.

Why are herpes carriers so defensive when herpes free people don't want to get herpes? You have so many more herpes carriers to choose from that you're spoilt for choice. Why infect new people?

What in the world are you talking about? She was just correcting a factually incorrect post.

LOL I'm not.
I'm just educated on the subject.
I probably wouldn't be so "defensive" if it were about me. I tend to defend myself less than I do others. It's about people I care about, including a close relative I grew up with. I've heard the same thing from many friends and acquaintances who were willing to discuss the subject--the symptoms aren't really that bad, but the stigma is brutal. Seeing and knowing that, I have felt it was responsible to research the topic and speak truth to it.
Now I don't blame anyone, all things being equal, for preferring to remain HSV negative. I am grateful to be thus myself, though if it's as common as experts say, I remain surprised I've been so lucky. But I'm still going to correct ignorance with facts when the subject comes up.
