I wanted to see what people think about this. Is there a difference to you? To me it's one in the same, but this discussion came up with a coworker today.

the new gen thinks there's a difference. the stages goes as follows

1. Talking
You just met (maybe on tinder) and you're just talking or maybe going on casual dates or having casual sex. "Yeah I'm talkin to someone". You can 'talk" to multiple people at once without any emotional connection.

2. Seeing

Seeing someone is seen as the phase where you are consistently hanging with this person. An untrained eye might say "so you're dating" but you will be quickly corrected to "no we're just seeing each other" The subtle difference is "ok I like this guy/girl but I'm not too sure where we're at and I don't wanna put a strong label on things" Lets just have fun and see where things go.

3. Dating
We had the talk. We have decided that we are dating. This is further broken down to whether you are dating exclusively or dating multiple people however you are not in a committed monogamous relationship at this point. "He is not my boyfriend - we're dating."

From then on your graduate to being in a relationship - engaged - married. etc.

Could be same, could be different. It only matters that the two people involved know what it means to the other.

To me seeing someone is a step before dating. It's like getting to know each other, before considering dating...

I agree with brooklynpad views on that matter.

There is no accepted distinction. Some would see dating as monogamous, others would not. Instead of using a term, just be clear with each other. We are or are not monogamous.

Dating someone : Romantic.
Seeing someone : Platonic.

They can mean different things to different people. I would agree that dating seems like it's higher on the committed/serious scale.

I think if I said I was “dating someone” I’d mean singular, one date at a time. It could end after the next date.
If I said I was “seeing someone” it sounds more complete, like a relationship. I’m never seeing more than one person.

See how we all interpret it differently? And yet none of it matters.
