I just tried to give online dating another try (the holidays always seems to be the time which brings out my desire to find someone) and I deliberately put a less flattering couple of photos of myself on my profile and all I get is messages from guys gushing about how beautiful I am and it annoys me to high hell. I am not what I would. consider beautiful. I am getting older, I see the lines on my face, and I'm 240 pounds and have yo-yoed back and forth from 195 to 245 for the past few years, can't seem to keep weight off. I don't think I'm ugly, I'm decent-looking enough, but not to the extent to which these messages I'm getting indicate. When a guy messages me telling me I'm really beautiful I cringe and immediately think he's a con artist. All I want is a message from a guy saying "Hi, how's it going?" or something to that effect.
I was wondering if other ladies who do online dating feel the same way? Or am I just being ridiculous?

If it doesn't seem sincere, it would be annoying... Online dating is mostly just men looking for sex, so they will say anything to a woman..
I would say those men are probably romance scammers. Real men don't talk like that. I'm not on OLD but just on FB I get friend requests/message requests from "men" who start out "Hello Pretty." My profile pic is a pet, and I don't have any other pics of me online.
When they start calling you "My queen" then you KNOW they are a scammer.
Yeah, I'd never believe any compliment in that context...cheesy at best...and since they don't know you, how can it be based on anything other than a physical attribute?

Yes, you are ridiculous, even if you do not see yourself beautiful, others can.
The only men who have ever said anything in the general ballpark of "hello, gorgeous" were cosmetics salesmen.
OP, you're not being ridiculous. Perhaps you should ask these guys if they're salesmen. And if they ask you you ask, tell them they're coming across like it. That should take care of the problem.

Did you miss the part where she said, her profile pic is of her pet? How would "others", in the context of OLD--strangers, be able to see her as anything, if they've never, in fact, seen her at all, nor seen a reasonable facsimile of her?

There are gorgeous women out there, even on old sites.
