Why are people who aren't married by the time they're 30 considered "gay"?

Most of my friends from college were not married until after 30, and I'd guess that 1/3 of them are still not married in their mid 40's. Mainly techie types. Why? It ain't because they're gay, it's either because (1) they don't go out a lot or (2) they have no interest at all in being married.
One can date a lot and have a fairly active social live w/o being married.
Of course, that is in the suburban Twin Cities. I get a different vibe (different set of expectations) down here in the Atlanta metro.
