I have a medical encyclopedia from a course I took, I believe I read
the virus hides in the nerve endings of the spine, until triggered by stress,
or other reasons.
yessir/maam it certainly does. Stress hasnt necessarily been conclusively linked as a trigger. No one really knows what triggers outbreaks. But it is extremely difficult to cure since it hides in the nerve bundles at the base (HSV2) and at the top (HSV1) of the spine. It always only affects one side of the body. If a person has symptoms on both sides of the body, it will likely not be diagnosed as herpes. Encephalitis from menengitis (sp) is the real danger of HSV1 in children. Otherwise most of the population has it or will get it by the time they are old.
20-25% of people have HSV2 though, with a higher incidence of occurence among women than men.
It is estimated that HSV2 viral shedding when not presenting with a cold sore only sheds 10% of the time, or 10 days a month. So its not highly likely that anyone would catch it without a cold sore present, but the possibility exists. HSV2 and HSV1 usually are preceded by prodrome. Prodrome is the tingling, burning, or itchiness, one would feel exactly where the recurrence will happen, 24-48 hours before an outbreak. But prodrome only happens AFTER the primary outbreak. In HSV2, the primary, or initial outbreak does not have a prodrome stage (not sure about HSV1), and rather just presents with a linelike/linear cluster of blisters along one side of the genitals. Herpes supposedly is like Greek or Latin for Serpentine, which is the reference to the serpentine pattern of sores.
After the first outbreak, which everyone with HSV2 will have, whether they recognize it or not, the viruse remains dormant, and just before more tiny blisters appear, the prodrome stage occurs with itching, burning sensation, or tingling. Herpes, because it is a virus that attaches to the nerve bundles along the spine, can cause leg pain and lower back pain. But again, this would only be on one side of the body. Scary stuff eh?..lol
