Does anyone know if this is true:

IPhone (and some other cell phone from other providers) users can track where YOU are just by plugging in YOUR cell number.

Is that true?!?!?!

I found out about this because one of my friends "supposedly" is using her IPhone to track her husband's whereabouts

People tracking by phone has been going on for a loooong time now. This came into play because of 911 emergency calls. Someone may be too ill to speak therefore their location can be tracked.

Never heard of it.

Now, you can install something in cellphones that make them trackable, I almost did it to my daughter's phone, in case she ever got lost. You can get it in some kids phones.

Well, on my iPhone, there are programs such as GoogleMaps and PathTracker that automatically triangulate on celltowers to get a fix on your position. It's not terribly precise, but a cool feature nonetheless.

I also know there are applications where you can keep tabs of where your iPhone friends are at all times. But I think you have to opt into being part of their network.

I know that ENTERPRISES and Government agencies can track citizens. But what I didn't realize is that now, regular people can track other people just by knowing their cell phones.

This is kind of scary. Imagine giving your cell number to the wrong person?

I would imagine if someone owned/had a 3G (which has GPS), they could track that user's/owner's location through a service, but I don't think being able to track someone has anything to do with owning an iPhone specifically.

I do have an application on my iPhone that if stolen and the app is opened, it tiangulates the phone's location and sends me emails with results, but I can't just find out someone else's location just because I, myself, own an iPhone.
