It's entirely possible that the conversation was never had so the person who setrs it up doesn't know that the person wouldn't like it. The above two posters said it best. It's not something worth breaking up over. Anyone who sets up such a scenarion is trying to make it a nice birthday.

In that case it would be a grin and bare it type of thing. I've read through the posts again and I don't see one that even suggests ending a friendship over this. I think that's a huge overexaggeration/overreaction to what we're actually saying. I don't like it. I think its corny, childish and its uncomfortable. That doesn't make me a wet blanket, I just enjoy celebrating my birthday differently. A friend who "knows" me, would plan something I'd enjoy. Otherwise, what's the point.

Also, I would venture to bet that some, if not many, of those who don't like to have people celebrate their birthday at a restaurant are the same people who will leave the restaurant, go to club, or a party in their honor, get sht faced drunk and make asses of themselves in public anyway.
You have quite the imagination.

I don't care either way. As for the wait staff, it's their job. That's why places like Red Robin and Applebee's have their little ditties they sing. Does the wait staff hate it? Possibly some of them, just like some of them hate bussing tables or making schedules.

It's not the end of the world.
What I find so funny about your post and HTBU posts is that you two have taken this to the extremes. Between us being drunks and bringing rape into the conversation is funny. I would think people who are for this type of celebration would be a little more jovial.

I don't have a problem with it, but then free chocolate in any form is always a winning situation in my book.

That is my point. I just hate it, I hate being in the restaurant when it is being done to someone else, so I could just imagine it being done to me.

I am the furthest thing from a wet blanket, and I definitely do not go out and get **** faced and act a fool either. Nice try though

I absolutely cannot stand such displays for myself. I once had some people who worked for me take me to a supposed birthday lunch, only to be presented with a giant, and I mean one of the largest ever seen, sombreros and a mariachi band to sing happy birthday. It was creative, and I went with the flow, but I was wondering who would be the first to get fired when I got back to the office. LOL...well, not that bad, they did survive, barely.

It was a good practical joke, though, since they knew they could not get me in a normal manner, since I knew what lunch places to avoid, or so I thought. LOL

It's not my favorite thing, but I'm a sport and I will go with the flow. I am not shy in the least, so I might even song along or get up and dance with one of the people singing to me. Yes, I am THAT person with the lampshade on my head at the party!

I personally enjoy how they sing Happy Birthday in a new and different version. It's nevet the regular old "Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday to you...Happy Birthday Dear so and so...Happy Birthday to you!" Instead they spice it up by singing songs like "Happy Happy Birthday, from the Outback crew!" and so on!!! It's great! Plus, I really enjoy going out and hearing the Happy Birthday song like 10 times in one night at the same restaurant! That's also a blast! (sarcastic!!)

I think it is because legally, they would have to pay royalties to sing the actual Happy Birthday song!
