I didn't really feel this should be in the parenting section but here goes:

Do parents have a right to know if their teens are having sex?
Should teens tell their parents they're having sex? Why or why not?

Most teens wouldn't feel comfortable giving that information and I know I wouldn't be happy hearing about it either. You can bet I will be talking to my little girl when the time is right (around age 13?) to try to stay a virgin until she's at least 18 years old and if she must indulge, she must use condoms to protect herself. OMG I'll be hammering the condom thing home as well as the virgin thing. I realize the condom thing has a better chance of working than the virgin thing, but I will do my best knowing that I wasn't ready when I started having sex at age 16. I regret that deeply so I will try to get her not to make the same mistake. BTW, I'm very open minded and not religious, so this is coming more from knowing many kids are not emotionally ready and not from some morality standpoint.

I never told my parents. With their religious views I probably wouldn't be alive to sit here and exchange this cheerful banter with you guys! I don't expect my kids to tell me nor would I ask them.

I could see it now .....

Hey ma, pa ... I'll be at the park with Greg. We'll be doing the wild thing in the backseat of his car, so don't come out there and disturb us, okay???

I've been talking to my son about sex since he asked about where babies come from (around 5 or 6). He's 15 now and thankfully, since I've always been open w/him about relationships, sex, birth control and my own experience (unfortunately, I was really young when I started) he still feels comfortable talking to me about it.

I told him that I hope he tells me once he starts, b/c even though kids have a lot of questions about sex, once they start doing it, there are A LOT more questions about it.

Of course I want him to wait until he's older, when he can actually enjoy it for what it can be, but I'm realistic. All I ask is that he remains open and honest w/me so that if anything comes up, he'll know that he can come to me.
