How many people out there have had an old acquaintance contact them out of the blue... and shortly thereafter request a meetup?
Recently, I received a friend request on FaceBook from a girl I used to go to elementary (and probably middle) school with. This is a person I only knew more or less in passing, her house used to be on the route I walked to school. I don't really recall ever hanging out with her as friends, or even in a social situation (parties, etc). I haven't seen her in at least 9 years (but probably longer than that) since I moved to another city about 3 hours away during highschool, and haven't really been back since.
I accepted her friend request, I figure that I kinda knew her, what's the harm? So almost immediately, I get IMs from her (my screen name is listed on my FaceBook page)... and probably within 10-20 minutes of smalltalk chat she suggests meeting up. I did my best to sort of shy away from it... the typical vague "maybe in the future sometime if I'm passing through town" routine. Not too long after that I had to go to a meeting, and left the conversation for another day. During the smalltalk, she gives me a quick rundown of her life until now. Is a single mom, lives with her parents, out of work due to an at-work injury, saying all friends ditched her when she had the kid, etc.
So today I get another IM from her (I think about a week later). She says "I have a last minute question" and proceeds to invite me to stay at her house this upcoming Saturday. Again... 3+ hour trip to get there. Red flags shooting up like friggen fireworks... I tell her I have a weekend event planned for the superbowl... won't be able to get together. So she asks to get together the following weekend... persistent... so again I give the typical runaround "I'll have to check my schedule, blah blah blah".
No contest here - trust your instincts and go with them. They're always right. It's the no attention to the wake-up calls that call for trouble. She sounds like bad news. Trust me on this, please.
If you don't have the nerve to say no, tell her you're involved with someone or that someone you recently broke up with wants to try again.
1) An old girlfriend fresh off a breakup or divorce testing the waters.
2) An old colleague either looking for a job or just wanting to reestablish contact.

RUN. She sounds extremely needy with no boundries. Did I say run yet? RUN.
I had a horrible experience with an old best friend from Jr. High and High School. It was so horrible in fact, that I never want to meet ANYONE from my past because what if it turns out like that horrible experience! I agree with LovesMountains ... RUN!!!
A few months after I was married, I had not one, but two old girlfriends call me out of the blue, both while having major relationship issues. In both situations, Mrs. CPG simply handed the phone to me and went into the other room to watch television. I was polite, expressed sympathy, mentioned several times that I was now married, and hung up.
Unless it was a long lost love, I think these people are desperate when they have to seek out people from the past during hard times. You don't want her problems.
Hope you were kidding? Otherwise this is pretty disgusting advice.
