When my kids were young, I found if I could get them physically involved in an activity-I could sit & read my book in peace.
Sorta like them playing video games & being distracted-try it with physical activity.
Can you take them to parks, petting zoos, beaches to play in the sand, any little field trips to tire them out. & while they are doing the activity you can sit on a park bench relaxing & watch over them?

Me time is very important, and yes there is literature to support it as well. If your SO is being cranky about it, have a chat with him/her at a time when you are both relaxed (it might have to be at 2am). You'll both get more out of the relationship and enjoy it more if you each have some me time.
