I live pretty far from my family, but I visit and have always used the phone quite a bit. My dad recently had me join skype. Then, we talked my mom into it (she's weary of learning new applications). I have to say, it's awesome. I love seeing my folks. Mom and me put our laptops in our kitchens the Sunday before last during the snow storm in the mid-atlantic (where she is) and we just left them on all late morning and afternoon. We both cooked, cleaned, and hung out as we did our thing. It was so great.

So, do any of you that live far from loved ones use this technology?

My wife uses it to stay in touch with her family back in Russia. Since they both travel for their work, they havent had a chance to come visit us here in the US for a while. Plus, it gives them a chance to see their granddaughter.

Yep! Just "hung up" from talking with MM like we do every day and while I was in the US would talk to Mum every Monday and Tuesday night. It's great.

We don't use skype though, just Messenger IM to make computer to computer calls AND we would have visual but I've been reluctant to get a webcam. It's still compeletely free though and very reliable. I think in all the time I've been using it it's only not worked twice.

Just last week one of my girlfriends in Canada and I attempted a call but had some difficulties but I think she's going to get a proper mic and then we should be set there too.

It's THE BEST THING EVER!!!

More people call me on Skype than my home phone or cell phone.

Ahh, others are on board. I much prefer skype now than the phone, which is so odd for me. One of my friend's has one of those little dell's and the quality is poor. My folks have a mac and an hp and they both work excellent.

I love the fact that my Skype account rings on all my active computers, so if I have my laptop open/on in my room and the desktop is on in the family room, I can hear the phone ringing in both places and choose which computer I wish to answer on.

My brother and I used it when he lived overseas but we don't need it anymore...I always found the reception was shoddy but he was also in a third world country...

Skype works great and it's free, which is a considerable advantage when you talk with people overseas, but I don't keep it at home anymore because it's just another piece of high tech that makes me feel kept on a leash and I'm a free soul. I'd rather pay and talk when I feel like to. As far as cams - no way Jose!
