I have been offered a couple of high-profile posts in government. I politely declined. I make more money doing what I do, and I don't have to worry about the rough-and-tumble of politics, or having every single word parsed by the press.
Personally, having known my fair share of politicians, there are very few that I would want to know on a person-to-person basis.
Or more along the lines of a news anchor, or press secretary?
If the choice was between being so public that I couldn't get my nails done without the paparrazi, then I would definitely take the money and the private job.
My husband is in the medical field and far from being in the limelight but I will say it gets old as heck when we go out, people recognize him and start asking advice about ailments, confirming advice given in a consultation or showing him their rashes, swelling, etc....
My favorite situation is being the anonymous one at a party and listening to the person next to me saying they "such close" friends with my husband or when calls come into the office from folks we have not seen since middle school demanding immediate appointments because they are "best friends" with him
Heck, I can't make make even fairly benign statements on CD without one particular poster going off on some half-baked tirade (Even editing my comments to bolster her case). What do you think the local fish wrapper would do?
In that case, it probably wouldn't be so bad. It also depends on how big a city you are in. The bigger the city, the less likely you are to stand out when you are enjoying personal time.

I am happy under the radar...
Out of reps for you, but thanks.
