Not every guy has a sperm and go policy. It's been 3 months she states, I'm assuming there's been a penis in play by this point. If I recall her age grouping correctly, it's about 10yrs below ours, so the guy probably doesn't have much dating experience and is possibly trying to gauge how serious she wants to be.

While the dating Emily Post handbook probably gets sacrificed to heathen gods in this instance, I could see myself posing this quandary in my younger days, just to try and hint without actually saying anything yet that I was really into her and was otherwise thinking I'd like to be with her down the road if everything goes to the emotions playing in my head(s) plan.

This could be either way, simply a ploy to lower defenses, or because his are already down and hoping to gauge where her's are. Have to be there to know either way, and the best bet would be to discuss the matter with him, like 99.8% of the questions usually posed here.
