The only "wacky" part about kids...I've seen a few marriages where the couple thought kids would save their troubled marriage...Now that's an utter failure...
Great point. Everyone is coming up with their own variables. The following is open to anyone, not just Coolhand:
I could spin it like this...
Senario: Your friend invites you out to meet their friend at a local hangout. Within the first minute of meeting this friend of friend they tell you they just got a divorce or fired...Without knowing any variables such as their spouse or their jobs, which would you consider worse?
Now that's a completely different question than "which is more of a failure". Without knowing the person, or anything about either situation, I would say I'd have more sympathy for someone getting fired, and I'd certainly not categorize it as a "failure".

I did say "more of" a failure...I suppose I could of been more clear if I said closer to a failure...
I did not vote for either option because I do not think getting fired or getting a divorce is always a personal failure. I am divorced and do not consider myself a failure. My marriage failed, but the divorce was amicable and my ex-husband and I are actually still on friendly terms. We rarely talk but when we do it is not just civil, but friendly.
Also I have been fired before; I do not consider it a personal failure as I have always given 100% at every job. Sometimes you get a dose of bad luck in the boss department. Both times I have been fired, I have considered it a favor and it led to bigger and better things. I should add that the last time I was fired was many years ago!

I've been divorced once and fired twice. I can't say I view any of those situations a "failure" on my part. Just bad fits. Better to end it than stay in a situation where no one is happy.
Getting fired. It's a job and it's based on your performance. Marriage is based on your partner. Someone shiny comes along and off they go. You may have nothing to do with their decision. Plus it's personal when you're thrown away in marriage, a job is a job.
