If I kiss you then punch you in the stomach which would you believe.
If I am your best friend and i tell you I have your back, then laugh at you when someone makes a joke about you and then i walk off with that person who made the joke what do you believe.
Usually actions and body language tell on the lying words.
Yeah, my wife said she loved me in front of a few friends but was tearing my character down in the very same conversation.
I don't believe what people say.
Now now im sure she loves you...think about it is your wife insecure...most people make fun of others because they don't think highly of themselves. Gotta knock down to feel good....really sad. My mother is great advocate for that. She insults then turns around to be a hypocrite herself.

Wow. I just had this same conversation with someone.
I think with "words" people tell you not only what you want to hear, but also their down deep desire to do what they say. But actually doing it - "actions" - may be difficult or impossible. I used the example of smoking. You may say you're quitting, but I smell smoke on you. You can quit after the next cigarette, or the one after that, but you haven't really quit, have you? You may want to, and tell me you are, but you're doing something else.

I'm one of those perfect people though who loves himself AND makes fun of others...
Used to be, I could be easily swayed. Not anymore. Experience has taught me that people believe the absolute best about themselves, and will manage to rationalize even the worst actions. Heck, on CD, there are a lot of people who say all the pious things, but how many of them translate those ideals into action? 10%?
